Tips for taking the best passport photos

Ask somebody else to take your photo

Generally speaking, you will get better results if somebody else takes your picture, though of course you can also create a good passport photo by taking a selfie.

Even, natural lighting

It is best to take the photo in daylight. Make sure your face is evenly lit. Try positioning yourself in front of a window rather than to the side. Avoid direct sunlight.

Pay attention to the distance

If you're using the front camera, hold it approximately 40cm away from your face. If somebody else is using the rear camera, they should stand 1-2 metres away.

Sit up and look straight ahead

Look directly into the camera and avoid tilting your body forward or back. Remember to use the standard camera, not 'portrait mode' or any other special settings your phone might have.

Clear your background

The background must be light in colour - ideally white, pale cream or light grey - without any shadows.

Remove any headgear

Head coverings such as hats, headbands or scarves are not permitted, but there are some exceptions to this rule, such as head coverings worn for religious or medical reasons.

Comparison of two images to create a positive environment for faces.

Relax your face and keep it neutral

Look straight into the camera with a neutral, unsmiling facial expression. Your mouth should be closed.

Take off your glasses

You should take off your glasses unless you can't have your photo taken without them. If you must wear glasses, you eyes must remain clearly visible, without any reflections or shadows disrupting your features. Tinted lenses or sunglasses are not permitted.

What is a biometric photo and why are they used for passports?

Biometric passport photos are special photos that meet strict technical specifications and capture certain distinct features of your face. This includes, for example, the distance between your eyes, the shape of your nose and mouth, as well as your facial expression and the direction of your gaze. In other words, biometric images capture measurements and data to determine what makes your face unique to you. Technically, they must meet certain requirements, such as the right image composition, good lighting, a suitable background and high resolution. All together, these rules mean you can be recognised in your passport photo as yourself.

Biometric photos are used for official documents such as ID cards, passports and driving licenses. They enable the authorities to confidently check whether the person presenting the ID is actually the rightful document holder. This makes forgery much more difficult.
