Spring Photography Tips

25th March 2021

We’re sure you may have already started to notice the key signs of spring around you, from the lighter mornings and longer evenings to the abundance of colourful flowers starting to bloom. It’s the perfect opportunity to get outdoors with your camera and embrace the beauty of spring. We’ve put together our top spring photography tips and ideas for you to capture on your smartphone or DSLR camera the next time you get out and about.

1) Find Colour in Spring

When you’re next out on a walk, capture the wide array of new colours that spring presents on camera. Look out for bluebells, daffodils, crocus and tulips – to name a few! Remember to look up at the trees and spot the beautiful blossom and new buds coming through. Get up close and personal with macro flower photography to capture all the finer details and natural beauty of the flowers. Alternatively, make the flowers stand out with a blurred background, also known as bokeh. To achieve this, you’ll need to set your camera with a wide aperture, using the lowest f-value possible.

Top tip: You can easily create a stunning bokeh effect on your smartphone too – simply use the in-built Portrait mode on an iPhone or the Live Focus mode on a Samsung.

2) Look at the Whole Landscape

Once you’ve been up close to capture the finer details with macro flower photography, don’t forget to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. Spring is a beautiful time to admire the full landscape around you, not just the renewed growth of flowers. Look out for birds nesting, cute ducklings waddling at a nearby pond, or even lambs gracing our countryside fields. Not only this, you can look out for people enjoying the warmer days or even dogs playing in the park. There’s so many joyous moments throughout spring that truly make remarkable photos when captured on camera.

Top tip: Get out during golden hour to make the most of the beautiful sunrise and sunset glow during spring, perfectly lighting up your photos with a stunning golden hue – it’s also the ideal time to capture active wildlife too!

3) The Perfect Spring Weather

Don’t let clouds deter you from capturing the beauty of spring! Although it’s nice to get out in the beautiful midday sunshine, it may not work in your favour when it comes to springtime photography. In fact, clouds are great for diffusing harsh light during the day and will make the colours from the spring bloom pop.

Make use of the handy in-built settings on your camera, such as landscape mode. As highlighted by our very own photo expert, Clare Moreton, in an article with Homes & Gardens, using the landscape mode for your spring photography “will boost the blues, greens and naturally bold colours in your photos,” whilst clouds help to “capture the very essence of spring without appearing too bright.”

4) Preserve Your Spring Moments

If you’re feeling crafty and want an aesthetic spring activity, you can create your own pressed flower art. Bring the natural beauty of spring into your home with your own DIY pressed flower frame. Simply leave your chosen flower (dainty, delicate ones work best!) pressed between blotting paper and heavy books, or an official flower press. Leave it for 2-4 weeks in a dry place, with regular check-ups to replace the blotting paper if required. When ready, use tweezers to handle your flowers and gently add glue before positioning onto a glass frame.

Alternatively, you can create your own pressed flower cards to send to friends and family. Or, once fully dried, place your pressed flowers within the pages of a CEWE PHOTOBOOK, filled with your stunning spring photography as a token and reminder of your adventures.

Top tip: For those who don’t consider themselves crafty, simply have your favourite spring photographs printed professionally as a Canvas Print, Framed Print or Poster to preserve those special moments forever.
